The first half of each verse is an invitation, the second half the result of responding to that invitation.
Each verse of this song is developed from a verse in the Bible.
Stanza one: Matthew 11:28—Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Stanza two: John 4:14—But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
Stanza three: John 8:12—Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
A maid in the Bonar home heard the voice of Jesus when Mr. Bonar closed himself in his study for his daily hours of prayer, and was converted. She said, “If he needs to pray so much, what will happen to me if I don’t pray?”
